The introduction of heat pump air conditioners in the early 1980s as part of the Energy Improvement and Conservation Act (EICA) program has stimulated the development of “double shell” ground source heat pump technology which, in some respects, is the “classic” ground source heat pump. This technology has been applied to both the “floorless” and “floor-integrated” types of ground source heat pump designs.
The basic concept of a classic ground source heat pump is to utilize a heat exchange material placed at the base of a drilled borehole or a deep drilled borehole in the earth's subsurface. Heat exchange material can be any material that has the capacity to absorb heat from its surroundings and then to transfer this heat to a cooler fluid for subsequent use. The heat exchanger material, called a “ground loop” or “ground loop heat exchanger”, is typically a porous rock, such as shale, other mineral material, or a combination of these. Such ground heat exchangers have been used for a number of years, generally in large scale operations. For example, in the heat pump industry, ground heat exchangers have been used in ground source heat pump units that use ground loop heat exchangers to preheat the water used in the absorption process. The history of the use of ground source heat pumps with ground loop heat exchangers has been primarily to provide water preheating for absorption and desorption water tanks.
